Preliminary Exercise: Genre and Iconography

In this preliminary exercise I worked on individual actors who are "type-casted" as a certain role in many movies that they played in. The term type casted refers to an actor who plays a similar role in roles they are casted for. Somewhat like a character archetype. I choose Jackie Chan. He is widely known for being a strong well skilled fighter in his movies. The four most prominent I choose were karate kid, Rush hour, The spy next door, and the tuxedo. many of the movies that this celebrity stars in have similar themes like revenge or crime doesn't pay. Mise en Scene also plays a role in how his character was depicted and how it contributes to his role for instance, lighting and Setting. The lighting used is generally very warm to show exhaust from fighting or sweat. Settings such as warehouses and gang territory locations make sense because in his type-casted role he is usually the protagonists skilled fighter who comes to "save the day" or resolve the problem in the plot. The chart I created can be seen down below.

Hey everyone this is my first post on my blog! To me, media studies are the way to learn about how the media has changed and evolved, how media is used today, and all the effects that it has had in our society. The things that I have learned so far have impacted the way I perceive or consume media products. I would like to be able to break down certain media pieces to interpret them and respond or react accordingly. Some of the media I consume on the daily basis include social media, prin...

Setting, Set Design, and Props Preliminary Exercise

Production Design  Production design is the overall visual look or aesthetic of a story. There are different factors that make up production design in a movie including setting, set design, and props. These three contribute greatly to the overall feel the audience decodes. The role that setting plays is showing the importance of the place the movie takes place in to the plot. Set design can also widely contribute to the feelings of the characters in the scene and props do this also. The production designer is responsible for production design. It is significant to audience because it helps convey deeper meaning for the audience to decode. The primary purpose of production design is to create a mood, articulate themes, and eternalizes the state of a character. The major responsibilities of a production designer include identifying a design style for sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, camera angles and costumes. video link: https://youtu.be/wNXNEs2eBkg
