Mise En Scene Graphic Organizer

During class today I made a graphic organizer to help me be able to evaluate mise en scene elements. This will be helpful for the future film product me and my teammates will make. Mise en Scene is arguably the most important element in bringing a film to life. Although there is many different details and nuances that can be discussed when studying mise en scene, I broke it down into 7 major portions to help me remember the most significant ones. The ones I included were setting, acting, color, set design, composition, lighting, and costume, hair, & makeup.

Genre Research

As we continue our planning process for our films, we first are exploring different genre options. The genre of a movie is a key element in the film making process considering that the genre will determine the type of plot, camera work, and conventions being used. My teammates and I constructed a list of various genres we would consider for our own film product. These are the ones we stated: Action, Crime, horror, Adventure, Musical, animated, romance, comedy, Science fiction, Drama, Thriller, fantasy, western, and historical. We looked at this list and took note of what each of these genre's conventions would require. For instance, costume hair and makeup for western movies we could get very creative with and incorporate artiness in. Additionally, for horror we could use props like a bat and use fake blood. In Crime we could use handcuffs. After a long thought process, we narrowed down our list to drama, horror, and crime.

Preliminary Exercise: Genre and Iconography

In this preliminary exercise I worked on individual actors who are "type-casted" as a certain role in many movies that they played in. The term type casted refers to an actor who plays a similar role in roles they are casted for. Somewhat like a character archetype. I choose Jackie Chan. He is widely known for being a strong well skilled fighter in his movies. The four most prominent I choose were karate kid, Rush hour, The spy next door, and the tuxedo. many of the movies that this celebrity stars in have similar themes like revenge or crime doesn't pay. Mise en Scene also plays a role in how his character was depicted and how it contributes to his role for instance, lighting and Setting. The lighting used is generally very warm to show exhaust from fighting or sweat. Settings such as warehouses and gang territory locations make sense because in his type-casted role he is usually the protagonists skilled fighter who comes to "save the day" or resolve the proble...

Film Codes and Genre Conventions Preliminary Exercise 1 (Symbolic Codes Closed Reading of VALERIAN Official Trailer # 1 (2017)

Symbolic codes are significant to audiences because it helps creates a visual understanding of the feeling or connotation the author/producer is trying to convey. Some of the ways film producers use symbolic codes include setting, costumes, and color lighting. These codes can represent how a character in a scene feels or what the atmosphere is like. I believe the reason film producers use symbolic codes is to implement deeper meaning. For instance, a character in a scene can explicitly say that they are doing emotionally well but the color lighting, tone their hair, makeup, and costume can say an entirely different thing about their mental health.    In the media text Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets the genre is sci-fi. Sci-fi is essentially science fiction and for the most part they usually contain futuristic and technological advances along with life on other planets. In the trailer clip it seemed that the conflict was a society on another planet that has l...

How the Film Industry Uses Media convergence

Media Convergence refers to the interconnection of networks, media content, information, etc. and the film industry does this in many ways in order to promote and reach their audience. In class today, me and my partner were tasked with finding a film product and showcasing the different ways media convergence was used. The film we choose was "Bad Boys for Life" which is a sequel in which 2 detectives come together, one of them handsome and young and the other older and dealing with aging. The movie showcases the hardships they each dealt with personally and professionally. As seen in the photo below we provided media convergence in the form of print media, TV, Digital media, and audio. Our examples included Websites, photography, commercials, music albums, and magazines. We provided information as to specific media platforms and how audiences are able to access and consume the media forms.

Demographics

The term demographics relates to how an audience is categorized based on aspects like age, gender, sexuality, culture, social class, and race or ethnicity. Media industries that are putting out a product spend a considerable time analyzing demographics in order to be able to identify the groups of people who are most likely going to be purchasing or giving money towards their product. In the photo that can be seen above there is a series of four media products. Along with my work group we were tasked to categorize the demographics for each of these films. We choose to split the work by each of us completing one section. My section was the first row "A Quiet Place Part 2" In this film the age group 13-25 years of age are likely to view this product because majority of the characters showcased were young people and what they experienced being young in the movie's plot. The storyline consists of 2 siblings going through the horrors of having their home invaded by fore...

Media forms used to promote and engage audiences

When a product is created production companies use other media forms in order to engage their target audience. Examples of this include but are not limited to broadcasting media such as television and radio. Broadcast media is the distribution and transmission of any type of product to the public. Advertising a product by T.V and radio is very strategic. Many people across the world own or are able to view a television or hear a radio, if not in their home, then somewhere in public. The product being advertised has the ability to reach a large population. An example of this is when the children's movie "The secret life of pets 2" launched a television commercial with Mcdonalds where the toys inside of the happy meal were the main characters of the film right when the movie was getting ready to be shown in theaters.  reference picture: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYQ125xUhyCo&psig=AOvVaw0D2i7BNp1fDBd9D_pr...

Welcome to my blog!

Hey everyone this is my first post on my blog! To me, media studies are the way to learn about how the media has changed and evolved, how media is used today, and all the effects that it has had in our society. The things that I have learned so far have impacted the way I perceive or consume media products. It made me stop and think about all the codes and marketing strategies etc. that I have somehow never paid much attention to or noticed. It helps me digest the world differently. Media studies have so far taught me the importance of understanding how the media is used to engage audiences.      What I hope to get out of the experience of learning media studies is generating a basic understanding of how media affects me and how I can apply to know those skills to my soon adult/career life. I would like to be able to break down certain media pieces to interpret them and respond or react accordingly. Some of the media I consume on the daily basis include social media, prin...
