Costume, Hair, and Makeup

Costume, Hair, and Makeup is a big part in showcasing to the audience important details they'll need to understand the plot in a film. It also brings the actions and storyline to life. In order to accurately portray the story that is being told the actors must look like what the scene is showing. For example, a ski instructor in a film would not be wearing a tank top and flip flops, they would have on protective gear and warm clothing. Makeup especially plays a great role in bringing the story to life because it can show how the character is feeling in a shot. I put together two examples of costume, hair, and makeup conveying a message to the audience. In the pictures down below a woman who has obviously been hurt is shown. Her makeup shows bruising, blood, and inflammation in her face. Bandages are wrapped around her head and nose these paints to the reader that the woman has gone through a trauma. the makeup in the picture also reveals an internal idea of how she...

Acting in film

Acting in film is a character who embodies a role in which they are portraying a story. There are different elements in acting that help tell the story. These include Appearance, Facial expression, Body Language, Voice Qualities, Personality, role, and actions. Appearance is how the character looks. Facial expression is the look the character has on their face. body language refers to what the character is doing head to toe that evokes a feeling to an audience. Voice qualities is how the character sounds when speaking. (This can vary. For example, someone sounding discouraged in their voice). Personality is distinctive character traits that the person has. A role is what the character plays. Actions is what the character does in the storyline. In a movie analysis of acting, I gathered examples of these elements of acting in the film "secret Obsession". This activity especially helped with understanding acting conventions so that when my teammate...

Forms of Marketing

I have previously learned about the different ways production companies use various types of media to promote their products. They achieve this through media conversion. Marketing is arguably the most important aspect of releasing a product. The marketing plan is what determines whether the product reaches its intended target audience and if it becomes successful. Some marketing forms include print media, digital media, outdoor media, moving images, and partnerships with other companies (synergy). In an assignment I choose examples of marketing of the movie "secret obsession". The production company for this movie used magazines and third-party viewing sites to promote the release of the upcoming movie. Netflix, a popular streaming service, created a countdown until the movie was available on their network. The movie also did partnerships with Roku Tv and Megasport. A full list i made can be seen in the photo below.

Codes in film analysis target audience.

The target audience of a film is who the production is aiming at to consume their product. A target audience can be mainstream or niche. Creating a target audience can be vary on multiple things like demographics and Psychographics. Demographics focuses on a groups age, gender, sexuality, etc. while psychographics focus on a group's interests, beliefs, values, etc. In this assignment my teammates and I analyzed the target audience we think the production aimed this film product at. The film we used is titled "secret obsession". This movie has a niche audience. What led us tom this conclusion was that the movie focus on specific messages and issues like domestic violence, stalking, manipulation, and dealing with a maracaists. These messages are not things that most people generally go through in their everyday lives, but some people do so we said that this movie has a niche audience. The demographics are women ages 18-35 of all races but specifically women i...

Codes in Film Analysis

An opening sequence in a film can reveal a lot about the message the director is trying to convey to the audience. They achieve this through the characters acting, the setting, set design, etc. In an assignment my teammates and I completed we did a sequence and message analysis of the movie "Secret Obsession". This film is about a woman who gets into a terrible accident and wakes up in a hospital to who she thinks is her husband. The man turns out to be a random man who was crazily obsessed with this woman and went to lengths such as killing her parents and real husband in order to create a make-believe happy life with her. The opening of a movie can also be used as an attention grabber. In this film the opening was climatic scene of the woman running away from a mysterious man, she hides and then gets chased down as she tries to escape, she finally gets ran over by a car then she wakes up in a hospital. This opening was a flashback. Flashbacks can be used to give the audienc...

Mise En Scene: Setting, Set Design, and Props Preliminary Exercise

Production design is the overall visual look of a production. This element is very important because it achieves three main goals: Sets the scenes mood, reflect how the character in the scene is feeling, and it can also convey a theme to the audience. A production designer is responsible for achieving these goals. In a scene where somebody has just been fired from a job that they really need, the set design would match the mood of worry, bitterness, or stress because that probably is what matches the current mood of the film. The set design also would reflect the characters feelings. Setting is a powerful way to give the audience a feel of what state a character is currently in. Set design can also be used to convey a theme by using it in a strategic way to reveal to the audience what the deeper meaning is.        Setting in film refers to the time and/ or place a narrative occurs in. This is essential in production because without a...

Annotation of a Character

These past few weeks in class we have been working on how to correctly analyze and annotate a character in order to understand the Mise En Scene and film conventions the director and screen writer used to bring the character to life. I completed a practice exercise of annotating the character Starfire from the series "T.I.T.A.N. S". Starfire is an alien from another planet who has come to earth because a rival alien race has taken over and enslaved the aliens of her planet. Starfire manages to escape and when she comes to earth, she joins a group called the teen titans and together they fight crime. Some adjectives I would use to describe her is strong, intelligent, and skilled. My analysis of one specific shot can be seen down below where Starfire has bright orange hair, and the flame of her powers are showing. She looks like she is about to engage in a fight.

Semiotics: Pierce's Theory

Charles Pierce was a scientist and philosopher who said that semiotics was a relationship between symbol icon and index. In the PowerPoint that me and my teammate Kennedy made we selected the movie "Five Feet Apart". We looked for different examples of an item in the movie and what it signifies in the shot and how it contributed to different film conventions. As seen in the image below the first picture is both characters standing a distance between each other and the item we choose was the characters jackets. As seen in the setting of the picture there is snow, and they are obviously in a cold place.

Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 1: Roland Barthes

Roland Barthes Theory of Semiotics  Semiotics is the study of signs and what they communicate. Roland Barthes was a French theorist who basically said that there are different meanings for a code being read. Known for his process called "order of signification" Two of the major ideas used to understand this theory is connotation and denotation. Connotation is the feelings that are evoked from a piece of media being consumed while denotation in the literal meaning for what's being shown for instance a rose. A rose being shown in a film is literally a flower however there can be feeling evoked from roses. A common example of this is roses signifying love. My teammates and I did a semiotic analysis of a film cover. The photo below is an example of a denotative sign used in the movie "Five Feet Apart".

Part A: Midterm Film Analysis Booklet Psychographics

Film: Secret Obsession Psychographics   This movie targets those with a belief system that  aligns  with  victims  overcoming trials and tribulations . The personality traits most present in this film include  neuroticism  and  narcissism. In the film the abusive  obsessive  stalker went great  lengths to ensure that the woman he wanted was his like murdering her husband and parents and isolating her away  from friends, family, an d her job.  He  used her memory loss as means to manipulate  her into   his crazed fantasy.  The tones in the film include  dramatic, manipulative, fearful,  serious, depressing,  horrific .  The lifestyle in the film falls under survivor once the main character  realizes  the grave  danger,  she was in  she  does all she  can  while being injured  to escape and find authorities.  The  psycho...

Semiotics: Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory

Ferdinand de Saussure liked to refer to his theory as semiology. The big idea was that he believed in sign= signifier + signified. My teammates and I used the movie "five feet apart" and picked out signs from the movie and identified the signifier and the signified. The signs we choose had major meanings that were important to the plot. We analyzed each sign and figured out what the each meant and came up with a graphic organizer. The example from the film we used was a cover poster with lungs on them (seen down below). The signifier was the pair of lungs and the signified was the two young individuals who each have all this joy and brightness in them despite their living conditions but not be able to share it with one another fully because their disease doesn't allow them to come closer than 5 feet. Also, the big, bolded words "five feet" puts a space between the boy and girl and their hands up are showing that they would each like to come closer the big thin...

Psychographics

Psychographics is a wide range of people's interest, personality traits, attitudes, values/beliefs, and lifestyles. Psychographics are often used to help build a portfolio and target a specific type of audience. Using psychographics is an essential part of product creation in order to market it well in order for the product to do well when it's put out. In this example that I will be using we will be specifically talking about a film product. Earlier in the year my team and I completed a film analysis of a drama about a woman being kidnapped. We concluded that the target audience in the values/belief category would be people who have a "trusting your gut" belief system for various reasons. Throughout the film the woman decided to ignore every red flag or alarming things she discovered about her soon to be husband until it was too late. The husband had already carried out his plan of kidnapping her and murdering everyone who was previously close to her. The woman...

Setting, Set Design, and Props Preliminary Exercise

Production Design  Production design is the overall visual look or aesthetic of a story. There are different factors that make up production design in a movie including setting, set design, and props. These three contribute greatly to the overall feel the audience decodes. The role that setting plays is showing the importance of the place the movie takes place in to the plot. Set design can also widely contribute to the feelings of the characters in the scene and props do this also. The production designer is responsible for production design. It is significant to audience because it helps convey deeper meaning for the audience to decode. The primary purpose of production design is to create a mood, articulate themes, and eternalizes the state of a character. The major responsibilities of a production designer include identifying a design style for sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, camera angles and costumes. video link: https://youtu.be/wNXNEs2eBkg
